Welcoming a New Little One? Here’s How to Choose the Perfect Props for Your Studio Newborn Session
Planning your baby’s first photo session can feel overwhelming, especially with so many sweet options to choose from. Whether you’re envisioning soft neutrals or meaningful heirlooms, these five simple tips will help you prepare for a beautiful and stress-free experience.
From selecting colors that complement your home to safely including siblings and sentimental pieces, I’ll walk you through each step to ensure your baby’s session is not only stunning, but deeply personal.
Let’s make this moment unforgettable.
1. Consider Where You’ll Display Your Images -
Think about where you’d like to hang your photos in your home. Choosing colors that complement the décor in those rooms can help ensure your portraits feel timeless and cohesive. If you’re unsure, feel free to send me a photo of the space. I’d be happy to recommend color palettes and prop options that will blend beautifully with your style.

2. Sibling Involvement and Safety -
If siblings will be joining the session, their ages will help determine the safest way to include them. For children under 2, we’ll use a sturdy basket with a weighted base and have them sit or kneel nearby. Ages 2–4 may work best with a small couch or chair, with baby securely supported between the sibling’s legs. Children 5 and older can often hold the baby while lying down, creating sweet and tender moments. No matter the pose, your baby’s safety will always be the top priority, with an adult close by at all times.

3. Wraps, Outfits, or Both? -
You don’t have to choose. I love to incorporate a variety of textures and looks into each session. Typically, I include a neutral wrap, a pop of color, and at least one carefully selected outfit. To help us start smoothly, please dress your baby in loose-fitting clothing without elastic that could leave marks—avoid tight socks, hats, or headbands. We’ll add all styling pieces just before photographing.

4. Incorporating Special Heirlooms -
If you have meaningful heirlooms, such as a locket, a handmade blanket, or a special item that belonged to a loved one, I would be honored to include them in your session. Letting me know ahead of time helps me plan the perfect set to highlight these treasures while keeping your baby comfortable and safe.

5. Don’t Forget About You -
These early days go by so quickly, and I encourage all parents to be part of the session, even if it’s just your hands holding baby’s feet or a soft kiss on the forehead. These intimate details often become the most cherished images. If you’re feeling unsure or self-conscious, please know I understand. I work with gentle angles and flattering light to capture your love and connection in a beautiful and natural way. One day, these images will mean the world to you.

Every newborn session is a unique story. A quiet celebration of love, connection, and new beginnings. My goal is to create timeless images that not only capture your baby’s first days, but also reflect your family’s heart. If you have questions or want to start planning your session, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s create something beautiful together. Something that will be treasured for generations.
